Gully
Directed by: Nabil Elderkin and the original screenplay was written by Marcus J. Guillory.
Completely underrated by google users and whoever actually takes the time to sign up for a Rotten Tomatoes profile. I really do believe I will find my true love based on our similar disdain for a particular movie. However, this is not a movie that is getting enough attention for the fact that it resonates with the energy of the nation right now.
Three teenage boys (Jacob Latimore – In The Chi// Charlie Plummer- Words on Bathroom Walls//Kelvin Harrison Jr. -The High Note) are on the edge of angsty release, as the pressures of what the real world has for them are landing in the city of angels for them. One high school dropout, another without any true parental figures, and one whose life has been distorted by sexual trauma from an early age. It shows the lives and tells the stories of many who have felt voiceless for decades, in a new and gritty way. I will say that I was most appreciative of the direction of the cinematography and the plotline. As the nature is of the film and television industry, it was a film that had to come to grips with it being its only chance to fully convey its idea, so it went hard. I am not one for spoilers, but I will declare, once more, that this is a story worth being heard and was
Nabil Elderkin is an Australian-American film & music video director. He has plenty of examples of his work in the slice of life category of films. Some of his works include Capture Land (2014), Cat Bounce (2018), and another gritty flick, Bantu Mama (2021).
Marcus Guillory is an author, screenwriter, and house DJ. He is currently a supervising producer for BET’s “Sacrifice”. His previous works include being a writer on the Marvel Sci-fi fantasy Cloak & Dagger, Red Now, and Laters: A Novel, a dark comedy called Pas Honteux, a short film in which social expectations meet willful stupidity.
Undone (2019)
This is for my animation fans. This is a special type of series, in that, not only does it bend your mind with the highly unique CGI that seemingly makes the characters feel more real, but also reels you in with the storyline of time and mental health, and the false beliefs we associate with both. While this show is NOT a guide for healing your mental health, it definitely challenges the hypotheticals about the metaphysical and how those aspects of truth can ultimately appear through the manifestation of what appears to be mental illness. I will spare you my theory on schizophrenia and being in a permanent rift of the time loop, but this show kinda grazes it in its own way.
This show was created by Kate Purdy & Raphael Bob-Waksberg, but they also served as executive producers on this series alongside Noel Bright, Tommy Pallotta & Steven A. Cohen. The actual creation of the animations was produced through the methods of motion capture and rotoscoping.
*Fun fact, I was a MoCap actress for a short film back in 2018.
The main character of Undone is Alma (Rosa Salazar), a woman, who after experiencing a traumatic brain injury from a car accident, is stumped when she sees her dead father appearing everywhere and she gains the ability to move through time..
The Boys: Diabolical
If you enjoy raunchy comedy, and if you were a fan of season one of the Superhero hit The Boys on Prime, then you might find a good laugh out of this animated spin-off in the meantime of season 2. This animated spin-off was created by Eric Kripke, Simon Racioppa,Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg. This series is loaded with many loved actors, including the original actors of The Boys voicing their characters. I enjoyed the entire season, but to save you time, I have ranked the episodes based on what emotions I experienced and how intensely.
Episode 5 is my #1 “BFFS”
All I feel comfortable saying is, if you believe in yourself amazing shit can happen”
Episode 7- “John & Sun- Hee”
had me in tears
This is proof we should allow things to take their natural course.
Episode 4 “Boyd in 3D”
While I was laughing it made some very real points.
Episode 1 “Laser Baby’s Day Out”
It was a good relief after a sad movie. I found it playfully and cute.
Lastly, I would like to add that this series is one of my favorites because of the creative minds behind it. The Boys: Diabolical is a great example of what animators and story writers can do to bring strong storytelling to life. It reminds me of The Animatrix from 2003. Someone, please make more animated anthology storylines, they are becoming the only kind I have a long enough attention span for.
Addicted to Fresno (2015)
Oh my! So glad to write about this one. When you’re bored at home, or with your one friend who doesn’t like any movie, this is the one for you. It’s a quirky tale of two sisters who have a strained relationship, and one of them can’t keep her legs closed long enough to heal it. Addicted to Fresno is a dark comedy film directed by Jamie Babbit and written by Karey Dornetto.
This flick features two very funny ladies, Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black) and Judy Greer(The Big Bang Theory); Natasha is about to make her SNL debut in the 47th season finale. It shows the humorous side effects of loving our toxic relatives a little too much. If this alone doesn’t make it sound appealing, consider that another beloved favorite makes an appearance in the film. Fred Armisen, Also known from SNL and an IFC favorite Portlandia is in this flick.
Whether you are seeking a good cry, a laugh, or something raunchy that makes you think, these are some great picks to fill your free time with, add to your watch list, or used to seal the deal on your flix n chill night.
